Highly Recommend this Tour Operator. Check in was a breeze. Ran on time and everyone was very pleasant. We were extremely lucky to have a beautiful morning for a 40min multi glacier helicopter ride. Our pilot Jordy was great and the snow landing was a treat.

It was a day for firsts for me, flying in a helicopter and walking on a glacier. Both where very exciting. The whole day is well run, from the people getting your kit sorted to the guides on the glacier. Highly recommend this activity. The views from the helicopter are breathtaking and from the glacier are stunning.

The whole team were really helpful and friendly. The pilot was informative. Due to weather conditions we could not land so the price was adjusted which I found very fair.

Worth every penny in my opinion, especially considering the speed with which the glaciers are retreating. Our pilot was delightful.

After rain all night, we were worried our flight would be cancelled. But luckily the weather improved. Our flight time moved a bit but was dealt with well. Our flight was amazing! Our pilot Rich was excellent. The snow landing was especially good! Highly recommend, one of the best 30 mins of our NZ adventure?

Blessed with blue skies, amazing views of the glacier and couldn't believe how close we were to Mount Cook. Fabulous to see this stunning scenery from another perspective. Our pilot was very informative and friendly. Standing on the glacier was special! Would definitely recommend.

Dramatic glacier landscapes from the air and ice

Franz Josef tours showcase one of the world’s most accessible alpine glaciers, where dense rainforest meets towering ice. Expect sweeping aerial views of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, jagged crevasses, snowfields, and the surrounding Southern Alps.

Scenic flight options with varying durations

Choose from short scenic helicopter flights or longer routes that cover both Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. Flight times vary, letting you opt for a quick aerial overview or a more immersive glacier experience with extended views and snow landings.

Snow landings and on-glacier moments

Most helicopter tours include a snow landing on the glacier itself, giving you time to step out onto the ice, take photos, and experience the scale and silence of the glacier up close, something not possible from ground walks alone.

Expert pilots and guided commentary

Flights are led by experienced local pilots who navigate rapidly changing alpine conditions and share insights into glacier formation, movement, and the surrounding landscape as you fly.

Accessible adventure with minimal hiking required

Unlike traditional glacier walks, helicopter tours require no long hikes or technical skills. This makes Franz Josef accessible to a wide range of travellers, including families, first-time visitors, and those short on time.

Ever-changing natural environment

Glaciers here shift constantly due to weather and climate, meaning no two tours are the same. Ice formations, snow patterns, and landing spots evolve throughout the year, adding a sense of uniqueness to every visit.

Things to know before booking your Franz Josef Glacier tour

  • Scenic flight vs. heli-hike vs. skydiving options: Choose short scenic helicopter flights for a quick aerial overview of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, or longer flights with extended glacier coverage and snow landings. Heli-hikes combine a helicopter flight with guided time on the glacier itself, letting you walk on the ice and explore crevasses with expert guides. For pure adrenaline, tandem skydiving delivers high-altitude freefall with sweeping views of glaciers, rainforest, and coastline.
  • Tour duration & time commitment: Scenic flights typically last 20–40 minutes in the air, with additional time for check-in and briefings. Heli-hikes take longer overall due to gear fitting and guided glacier time. Skydiving experiences require the biggest time window because of training and preparation—plan at least half a day.
  • Accessibility & physical effort: Scenic flights are low-effort and suitable for most travellers, including families and older visitors. Heli-hikes require moderate fitness and comfort walking on uneven ice. Skydiving is physically more demanding and best suited to active, confident travellers.
  • Visitor suitability & age considerations: Scenic helicopter tours are family-friendly and ideal for first-time visitors or those short on time. Longer flights and snow landings suit travellers looking for a deeper glacier experience. Adventures like skydiving are better suited to thrill-seekers and may have stricter age, weight, and health requirements.
  • Meeting point & transport: All helicopter and skydiving experiences depart from bases near Franz Josef Village. Self-drive access and parking are available, but hotel pick-ups are limited, so arriving early for check-in is essential—especially on weather-dependent days.
  • Weather dependency & flexibility: Alpine weather can change quickly. Flights and skydives may be delayed or rescheduled for safety, which is normal for this region. Booking earlier in your stay increases your chances of flying on a clear day and gives flexibility if plans shift.

What to expect on the day of your Franz Josef experience

Check-in & safety briefing

Arrive at your chosen operator’s base near Franz Josef Village and check in. After a weather check, you’ll receive a safety briefing covering flight procedures, equipment use, and what to expect during your experience.

Gear up (experience-dependent)

For heli-hikes, you’ll be fitted with boots, crampons, and outerwear. Skydivers suit up with a tandem instructor, while scenic flight guests prepare for boarding with minimal setup.

Take off over the glacier region

Lift off by helicopter or aircraft and enjoy sweeping aerial views of Franz Josef Glacier, surrounding rainforest, and the Southern Alps. Longer flights may include Fox Glacier and extended alpine coverage.

On-glacier landing or freefall moment

Heli-hikes and select flights include a snow landing, allowing time to walk on the glacier and explore ice formations. Skydiving experiences continue with a high-altitude ascent followed by an adrenaline-filled freefall over glaciers and coastline.

Guided exploration or scenic return

Heli-hike guests explore the glacier with a professional guide, learning about ice movement and formations. Scenic flights circle key landmarks before returning, while skydivers descend by parachute with panoramic views.

Return & post-experience time

Land back at the base, return gear if applicable, and view photos or videos if purchased. With most tours lasting a few hours door-to-door, you’ll still have time to explore Franz Josef Village, take a valley walk, or relax in the hot pools.

Duration:

  • Scenic helicopter flights: 20–40 minutes in the air
  • Heli-hike experiences: 3–4 hours total, including gear-up and glacier time

  • Distance: Franz Josef Village is located on New Zealand’s West Coast, around 2 hours from Hokitika and 4–5 hours from Queenstown by road.
  • Transfers: Most glacier experiences are self-drive, with tours departing from heliports close to Franz Josef Village. Public transport is limited, so having your own vehicle is recommended. Once checked in, all experiences operate via helicopter or aircraft. No long hikes required unless you choose a heli-hike.

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are essential in alpine conditions)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for snow glare during flights or glacier landings
  • Closed-toe shoes (mandatory for heli-hikes; recommended for all experiences)
  • Camera or phone for aerial and glacier photography
  • Light jacket, even in summer, as temperatures drop quickly on the ice
  • Note: Heli-hike guests are provided with specialist glacier gear on arrival.

  • Base facilities: Tour bases near Franz Josef Village include check-in counters, restrooms, safety briefing rooms, and gear-fitting areas.

  • Morning departures are smarter as calmer winds and clearer visibility increase the chances of smooth flights, snow landings, and uninterrupted views.
  • If short on time, choose a twin-glacier scenic flight to see both Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers in one go.
  • Upgrade only if conditions are right. On clear days, longer flights and higher skydive altitudes deliver dramatically better Southern Alps views, worth the jump in price.
  • For maximum immersion, a heli-hike offers the best balance of flight and glacier exploration.
  • Combine your glacier experience with nearby walks or hot pools for a relaxed same-day plan.
