A truly fabulous scenic flight with breathtaking views of the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, Mount Cook, and the Tasman Glacier. Everything was incredibly impressive, and the flight itself was super smooth. We absolutely loved it!

Highly Recommend this Tour Operator. Check in was a breeze. Ran on time and everyone was very pleasant. We were extremely lucky to have a beautiful morning for a 40min multi glacier helicopter ride. Our pilot Jordy was great and the snow landing was a treat.

It was a day for firsts for me, flying in a helicopter and walking on a glacier. Both where very exciting. The whole day is well run, from the people getting your kit sorted to the guides on the glacier. Highly recommend this activity. The views from the helicopter are breathtaking and from the glacier are stunning.

Blessed with blue skies, amazing views of the glacier and couldn't believe how close we were to Mount Cook. Fabulous to see this stunning scenery from another perspective. Our pilot was very informative and friendly. Standing on the glacier was special! Would definitely recommend.

Get to the top of the glacier

As the terminal face of the glacier is always changing, getting to the top of the glacier through just mountain climbing requires some experience. Instead, hop into a chopper and land directly on top of the glacier and explore its various ice formations from up close with the help of a glacier guide.

Magnificent top views of the Fox

Fly above the beautiful glacier to view towering seracs that stand like silent sentinels. Meanwhile, the guide will share with you  legends of how the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers got their beautiful names in Maori culture.

Spot other famous peaks nearby

Your helicopter flight doesn’t just include views of the Fox Glacier. You can also spot famous peaks of the Southern Alps, like Mount Cook and Mount Tasman along with the Franz Josef glacier. Keep an eye out for Victoria falls too, which cascades from the Victoria glacier nearby.

Expert guided glacier hike

Only after undergoing rigorous training and certifications does one become a glacier expert. Get a personal glacier coach to guide you to and through the various ice formations on the glacier on your heli hike. With one expert attending to a small group of 2-3 people, you can rest assured that you’ll have their full undivided attention to keep you safe on your journey.

How to pick the Fox Glacier heli hike that best suits you?

  • You can choose between two different experiences for your Fox Glacier heli hike; the Flying Fox experience that lasts 4 hours and the Extreme Fox all day heli hike that lasts 8 hours
  • Although neither of these options requires prior experience, hiking on a glacier carries a certain level of risk. The Flying Fox heli hike requires you to be moderately fit. This means that you must be able to climb up and down about 500m to 800m while carrying a light bag of up to 10kg. The Extreme Fox heli hike, on the other hand, needs you to have a good fitness level where you can ascend and descend more than 1000m while carrying a backpack of over 12kg
  • You must be fluent in English to participate in the Extreme Fox heli hike. You’ll need to use technical equipment for an entire day on raw glacier terrain, for which you must be able to understand and follow your guide’s instructions.
  • The minimum age for the Flying Fox heli hike is 9 years. For the Extreme Fox heli hike, the minimum age is 13 years. However, anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the experience.
  • The Flying Fox heli hike lasts about 4 hours with up to 3 hours spent hiking on the ice. This tour is available at 8:50am and 11:50am every day. The Extreme Fox heli hike lasts up to 8 hours, out of which about 7 hours will be spent on the ice. This experience starts at 8:15am every day. You must check-in at the front desk at least 20 minutes before the slot mentioned on your tickets for both  experiences.

What to expect on a Fox Glacier heli hike

Arrival

The timings mentioned on your tickets is when you’ll have to check-in. We suggest arriving at least 20 minutes prior to make sure that all processes run smoothly and on time. These include filling a waiver form and a briefing by your guide.

Briefing

The guide will give you a quick briefing on what to expect and what to look out for during your heli hike. As the hike progresses above actively moving ice, you’ll need to remain alert and follow the guide’s instructions. Use this opportunity to ask questions and clear your doubts.

Gearing up

The facility will provide almost all the items essential for your heli hike, including a waterproof overcoat and overtrousers, a hat, gloves, socks, boots and a backpack. Keep only the essentials in your backpack, like your phone, a small water bottle, some snacks and an additional warm layer. If you pick the 8-hour heli hike, carry some food for lunch as well.

Helicopter ride

Before your hike begins, a short helicopter ride will land you on top of the icy Fox Glacier. From here, you’ll spot several peaks of the Southern Alps as well as the towering seracs of the glacier. Once the hike is complete, the helicopter will pick you up again to take you back to the base, the Fox Glacier township.

Guided glacier hike

Once you’ve landed on the ice, you’ll have to put on the crampons given to you by the facility to begin the hike. Your glacier guide will take you on a 3-hour or a 7-hour hike, depending on the experience you’ve picked. During your hike, you’ll see massive crevasses and towering ice pillars called seracs, pass through icy caves and tunnels and spot frozen waterfalls.

Emergency supplies

The weather atop the glacier is ever-changing, so it’s not always possible to predict how it may be even at the end of the day. If due to drastic weather conditions the helicopter is unable to come to pick you up, there are emergency supplies placed in a safe location atop the glacier, including tents, sleeping bags, food and extra warm layers.

Peak season: Summer - Dec to Feb; Low season: Winter - Jun to Aug

Although Fox Glacier can be visited at almost any time of the year, the amount of adventure you want on your experience would determine the best time to visit.

Summer: During the summer, the glacier changes more rapidly due to the melting snow. This means larger cracks and a more drastically changing terrain. The hike will be a little riskier at this time, but you may get the opportunity to shed some layers and click some pictures in just your T-shirt.

Winter: The winter time is calmer on the Fox Glacier. The terrain remains still for a long period and you may get to see some blue ice too. This time has fewer crowds and is also better suited if you’re a first-time mountaineer. The weather remains relatively stable and temperatures don’t go too far below freezing either.
